Turning the Tide

3 - 31 March 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland

The British Council, the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations office at Geneva and the Global Risk Forum GRF Davos have jointly organised “Turning the Tide”, an international climate change photo exhibition during the main annual Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The exhibition with twelve winning posters was on display at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, from 3 to 30 March 2009. Very positive feedback was received according to the British Council e.g. HE Dr Ahmed Shaheed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives said: “These youngsters are the undeniable stars of this evening and I take this opportunity to salute their vision, their bravery and their determination to inform the world of their plight.”

Furthermore, the exhibition might be on display at other locations this year:

  •  Between the 17 and 19 of June the exhibition will be on display during the International Youth Forum organized by the Global Humanitarian Forum in Geneva.

  •  In collaboration with the Maldives Mission at the UN in New York later this year and in Copenhagen at the end of this year.

  •  At the World Environment Day in Mexico in June this year.

Note, that, according to the Brithish Council, there have been a number of articles about the Turning the Tide participants in the international media – one of them, Carolina Figueroa, received quite a lot of media attention in Colombia. She has since taken part in the first model United Nations conference on climate change. The attending students wrote the Bogota declaration, which will be presented in Copenhagen at the end of this year.
